10 to see at the London Design Festival

The London Design Festival starts on Saturday. With so much on offer over the nine days it is hard to see even half the events included so here COVER offers a selection of the best shows featuring carpets and textiles.

1. Future Heritage at Decorex (20-23 Sept)

Corinne Julius, design and applied arts critic, returns to Decorex with her second display of Future Heritage, a definitive guide to the most important designer makers and the names to collect in British craft this year. Of the eighteen designers included this year textiles will come from Rita Parniczky, who will show her award-winning X-Ray fabrics. Decorex returns to Syon Park this year. Look out for COVER’s stand K58 to pick up a free copy of the latest issue.

2. Rugs by Floor Story and Ptolemy Mann at Designjunction (24-27 Sept)

Designjunction has moved to two locations in Holborn: big brands will be showing at The College, 12-42 Southampton Row while opposite Victoria House will be a pop-up shopping destination. The college will be home to rugs from Ptolemy Mann and Cavalcanti plus Vitra, Kirkby Design, molo and many more big brands. COVER will be giving away copies of the latest 10 year anniversary edition of the magazine on the stand of Floor Story, who will be showing a host of new rug designs.

3. Donna Wilson’s snug (22-27 Sept)

As part of the Shoreditch Design Triangle at LDF, Donna Wilson will have a ‘snug’ installation and pop up shop at Studio 1.1 Gallery, 57a Redchurch Street. See all your favourite DW knitted creatures plus the new winter collection of clothes, perfect for keeping you warm in the upcoming months.

4. ‘Deconstructed Living’ by Brintons (23-24 Sept)

During the LDF carpet firm Brintons will be holding a 2-day exhibition entitled ‘Deconstructed Living’ at 133-135 Bethnal Green Road. The show will be a cross between an art installation and an architectural display with the main focus being a deconstructed skeleton of a building. Carpets will form floating walls, floors and ceilings with architectural detailing added.

5. Pam Weinstock at 100% Design (23-26 Sept)

100% Design is the design trade even for architects, specifiers and designers and this year the show is in Olympia. Photographer and designer Pam Weinstock, will present Mizu, her first full collection of textiles and wallcoverings, which look very exciting. The patterns come from photography captured in Japan and are based around the theme of water. There is an extensive lecture programme which begins on Wednesday at 11am with a talk by Ilse Crawford.

6. Designersblock (24-27 Sept)

Designersblock is a great event to see fresh designers showing a mixture of innovative work from jewellery to furniture. This year see fabulous textiles by Johanna Samuelsson, Emily Carter and Silkfelt to name but a few. The show is on at Bargehouse, Oxo Tower Wharf on London’s South Bank.

7. Tent & Superbrands (24-27 Sept)

Tent London at the Old Truman Brewery in East London is one of the most exciting LDF fairs for spotting new talent and fun design. This year don’t miss rugs by Sonya Winner and Claire Alderdice and a multitude of cool textile designers including Zoe Murphy, Kitty McCall and Dana Finnigan. Next door Superbrands will feature Ceadogan Rugs and Bolon among a host of big brands form across the globe.

8. Faye Toogood and Kvadrat at the V&A (19-27 Sept)

As partner to the London Design Festival, the Victoria and Albert Museum is a hub of activity during the nine day event. Just one of the many amazing displays will be The Cloakroom by British designer Faye Toogood with KvadratThe first part of the experience will be a literal cloakroom, located in Room 55, where visitors will be invited to check out one of 150 Toogood coats, which are made with Kvadrat material. Each coat will be equipped with a sewn-in map that guides the visitor through the second part of the installation: ten places in the Museum galleries, where they will discover a series of sculptural garments created by Toogood in response to nearby objects from the museum’s collection – from a 15th century timber-panelled room to a shining suit of armour.

Also at the V&A, on Wednesday at 11.30am-2pm will be a seminar on weaving with Jan Kath and Front, called Slow Making with Jan Kath’.

9. Vanderhurd and Another Country (23-26 Sept)

London-based flooring company Vanderhurd will be showing as part of a collaborative exhibition with the contemporary craft furniture company, Another Country, to celebrate its fifth birthday. The show will be on at the Another Country Apartment, which is located at Perseverance Works within the Shoreditch Design Triangle (entrance via 25 Hackney Road, London E2). The Apartment will be designed in association with Suzy Hoodless and will features a wide range of furniture and accessories from Another Country alongside Vanderhurd dhurries, cushions, a bed head and bed spread.

10. Adriana Tavares Rugs at Anthropologie (19-27 Sept)

‘Explore Limitless Creativity’ is an exhibition of rugs and work by Adriana Tavares that will be showing at Anthropologie at 158 Regents Street. The show will examine the relationship between drawings, experimental shape, colours and techniques, resulting in hand-tufted works of art. Adriana will also lead drawing workshops, focusing on the body’s form to create a mixed-media artwork.
