To celebrate the company’s 25th anniversary, Creative Matters is holding The Art Day Project at the Textile Museum of Canada in its home town of Toronto. The partnership between the rug firm and the museum aims to celebrate and demystify  the art of rug design and fair trade weaving by offering five days of rug-inspired events.

The project kicks off on Wednesday 20 November with a five-day exhibition, which offers a step-by-step guide to the processes behind the creation of one-of-a-kind fair trade handmade Nepalese rug. Admission is free. That evening co-Founder of Creative Matters, Carol Sebert, and Commercial Director of Label STEP, Reto Aschwanden, will give a talk entitled ‘Responsible Rug Making: The Fair Trade/Quality Connection’.

On Saturday 23 November the museum will host two two-hour workshops (at 10am and 2pm) as part of the project. The Creative Matters designers will lead the mark-making exercises inspired by objects and imagery from the TMC’s exhibition ‘Telling Stories’. Creative Matters will incorporate artwork created by workshop participants into original rug designs entered into the firm’s first-ever Art Day competition. The winning design will be handwoven in Nepal, and the winning rug will be donated to Label STEP, a NGO that encourages fair trade within the carpet industry.
