COVER 36 included a feature on Colony; a new design collective based on Canal Street in New York. The co-operative is organised and curated by Jean Lin, a former writer and trend forecaster, with the aim of providing a dynamic community for talented designers in the city.
One of the makers who exhibited work at the must-see studio show ‘Reclaim 3: Carte Blanche’ during New York Design Week (NYCxDesign) in May 2014 was textile artist, Hiroko Takeda who, since 2010 has worked from her eponymous New York design studio, producing textiles with both commercial and fine art credentials. Her inventive, complex, structural weaves have been applied in fashion, home furnishing and architectural installations. A deep technical knowledge and a background studying the Japanese arts and crafts movement of Mingei Undou is paired with an experimental curiosity. The combination of these qualities has lead to the creation of thoroughly contemporary refined textiles with a raw inventiveness, still rooted in craft heritage.
The Waffle collection was on show at Colony in May. This October there will be new work by Takeda exhibited there, as well as site-specific projects at architectural practices in Brooklyn and Dumbo.
