The Days, who both passed away in 2010 are Britain’s most celebrated design couple of the post war era. Having both studied at the Royal College of Art before World War I, they rose to prominence at the Festival of Britain in 1951. Working mainly as independent designers in separate fields, their products work together harmoniously and share a playful, optimistic ethos. Lucienne is noted for her abstract printed fabrics and the multitude of carpets, wallpapers and homewares that she was invited to design for major manufacturers and stores in the mid 20th century. Robin was the first to pioneer the use of Polypropylene in furniture and his commitment to developing low cost, mass market chairs meant that his products continued to be used for decades after their installation at such institutions as Tate Britain and the London Underground.

There will be 100 lots ranging from Scandinavian design classics to English antiques to African rugs demonstrating the Day’s wide ranging influences and eclectic, discriminating taste. The exhibition offers a rare glimpse into the lives of these cherished, iconic designers through their treasured possessions. The online auction will give the chance to own a piece of design history and to support a very worthwhile cause.
