Modern Historic: Designer Textiles at L’ArcoBaleno

December 01, 2014

Curated online marketplace, L’ArcoBaleno offers a refreshing and eclectic mix of international contemporary and global vintage design.

Curated online marketplace, L’ArcoBaleno (Italian for rainbow) offers a refreshing and eclectic mix of designer textiles, international contemporary and global vintage design. Several stylish neutral weavings have caught our eye.

Under the Carpet Wall Hanging by Portuguese graphic designer and illustrator, Mariana Fernandes took inspiration from the arraiolos weaving technique that is native to her home country. It is one of nine unique pieces by nine young designers that make up One and Only– an exclusively commissioned range of one-off collectables, that went online in November 2014.

The designers have been selected by Fabrica– a legendary communication research centre based in Treviso, Italy. The works themselves have all been produced in Europe by skilled artisans in an exploration of the dialogue between 2D and 3D practices. Ambra Medda, Creative Director and Co-Founder of L’ArcoBaleno explains: “In this project, designers and artisans are mutually supportive, bringing the designers work to life at such high quality and allowing the work to be seen by a larger audience.”

Elsewhere, Oaxaca based, Danish born Trine Ellitsgaard combines a Scandinavian sensibility with Mexican raw materials and techniques. She works closely with the weaving community of Teotitlán del Valle on a vintage loom. The intricate Untitled (Palma) screen is available in an edition of ten, while two one-off carpets, Untitled Textiles I & II give Mayan scrolls a modernist makeover in flatwoven sisal.
