This wooden carpet is by Esther Jongsma who graduated this year from the Design Academy in Eindhoven. Jongsma’s wooden design relates back to the patterns of old wooden floors. The slatted design means that when you walk over the carpet the pattern moves, making you aware of your own movement and meaning “you interact with the object”. Jongsma has created a carpet and a room divider using the same technique. She comments: “The essence of a carpet is that it defines a space. It creates borders without walls. But why should a carpet or floor only exist in two dimensions? And should it always be from fabric? This is what this wooden carpet shows. It is made using an old technique of making patterns in floors but it is given new meaning by building it in two layers which can communicate a message that depends on the movement of a person. The material gives new possibilities for applications.”
