Last week saw Phil Davison return to London, bringing his own brand of cross-stitch to the Rag Factory in the East End of the English capital. Far removed from the creations of grandmothers worldwide, Davison’s pieces display an affinity with popular culture and street art as well as a complete command of the craft. The exhibition showcased ten or so works, ranging from small-scale editions to a striking series of larger skulls, one even in the format of a rug. The eye for detail and design evident in the pieces comes as no surprise when you learn that Davison started out as a fashion couture pattern cutter. Reinterpreting digitally produced imagery, one ‘skull’ has the appearance of an X-ray. The effect and three-dimensionality is unlike anything else executed in the medium, and sources of true delight.

After launching his cross-stitch artwork in New York in 2014, Davison has exhibited his soft pieces along with his line of innovative furniture at 100% Design as part of London Design Week and at the recent edition of ICFF among other venues. Considering what has been achieved in a very short period of time, we cannot wait to see where Davison will take cross-stitch next.

XXX Stitch – Xhibit B took place on 13-16 August 2015
