What to see at NYCxDesign 2016

NYCxDesign, New York’s official design event, begins on Tuesday 3 May, offering two full weeks of exciting design shows happening across the city.  Here COVER offers a guide to the best rugs and textiles that will be on display.

ICFF – Javits Center, 11th Avenue at 38th Street (14-17 May)

The International Contemporary Furniture Fair has a long list of rug companies showing in 2016. Amy Helfand returns to the event this year with a series of new designs fresh from Nepal. Warp & Weft, Orley Shabahang, Nasiri and Jan Kath always impress with new bold statements and excellent quality while Shore Rugs will be showing off the firm’s indoor outdoor designs. International names include French rug brand Serge Lesage, Now Carpets from Spain and London’s House of Hackney with their unmistakable textile and wallpaper collections. Interiors brand Eskayel are sure to have a range of stunning rugs and textiles while metallic textiles for the home will be available from LcD Textile Edition and Sophie Mallebranche.

This year, Interior Design magazine and ICFF will present the first annual NYCxDESIGN Awards. Winners will be announced on 14 May at 6pm at the Museum of Modern Art.

WantedDesign NYC – Manhattan, Terminal Stores Building, 11th Avenue – (13-16 May), Brooklyn, Industry City in Sunset Park, 220 36th St, (7-17 May)

Founded in 2011, WantedDesign has become an important part of New York’s design festival. There are two venues for the show, one in Manhattan, at the landmark Terminal Stores building on 11th Avenue in West Chelsea’s Historic District. The second location – at Industry City in Sunset Park, Brooklyn – debuted on the agenda last year and has become a fixture. The event offers installations, pop-up stores, interactive experiences, lounge space and student workshops. We are looking forward to seeing Simone Post‘s upcycled rugs made using fabric by Vlisco and the amazing rugs and weavings of Dutch designer Lizan Freijsen. Elodie Blanchard will be creating an installation at the Manhattan show while Libs Elliott will be holding quilt workshops.
