September 05, 2014

Richard Tuttle is creating his largest ever work for the iconic Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, London 14 October 2014 – 6 April 2015

The American sculptor and poet, Richard Tuttle is creating his largest ever work for the iconic Turbine Hall at Tate Modern, London 14 October 2014 – 6 April 2015. The newly commissioned installation, entitled I Don’t know or The Weave of Textile Language, will measure over twelve metres in height and consist of specially made fabrics that combine natural and man-made fibres, suspended from the ceiling in a ‘huge volume of joyous colour and fluidity’.

The artist is a collector of textiles from around the world, and has devised this project to highlight the particular importance of textiles in his work. The Tate is working in collaboration with the Whitechapel Gallery, London where there will be a major exhibition surveying five decades of Tuttle’s career, 14 October – 14 December 2014. Winner of the Jerwood Prize, artist and lecturer, Shelly Goldsmith will lead a two-day practical workshop exploring textiles as material; Fibre, Thread and Textile will happen over the weekend of 25-26 October 2014 with one day at each gallery, to book click here.
