Recently awarded the Swiss Grand Prix of Design 2014 for his outstanding contribution to Swiss design, Alfredo Häberli is a Swiss Argentinian product designer, based in Zürich, Switzerland. He has worked with Danish textile brand Kvadrat on two previous occasions and for the London Design Festival 2014 Kvadrat launched a new textile collection by Alfredo Häberli which was presented with a special installation by the designer in the London showroom at 10 Shepherdess Walk.
For the launch Alfredo Häberli created DIS-PLAY, an oversized mood board capturing the creative process in creating the textiles. He also set up 3 vitrines containing three dimensional mood boards, to express the colour choices for the three new knitted textiles Nebula, Nadir and Galaxy.
Nebula is based on a floral Japanese picture, which is transformed into a pixelated raster using the knitting technique, three-dimensional Nebula features a pattern of organic, abstract shapes. Nadir is thick and tactile, as it is similarly constructed with thick polyester yarns between its front and back layers. Its pattern is based on interlinking and overlapping rings in different sizes. Galaxy features an irregular but refined pattern of small dots, which contrast with a unicoloured, light or dark background. This recalls the clusters of stars that make up galaxies.
