Adam Blencowe‘s Fuzzy Logic project featured in Design Notes in COVER 44. At the Clerkenwell Design Undefined exhibition during London Design Festival in September, he launched the Motley Rug Collection produced in collaboration with graphic designer, Marine Duroselle using his experimental felting technique.
The voyage of discovery began last year while he was studying at London’s Royal College of Art. ‘It’s a process led course,’ he explains. ‘It’s all about making, you get stuck in with your hands, explore material manipulation, come up with new ways of thinking about production and the ways that craft and product meet.’
Blencowe realised that two or more fabrics could be fused together in freehand graphic patterns by mechanically needle-punching the fibres of one through the surface of the other, effectively mixing the colours from each together in the process. ‘I decided to test what I could do with a more digitalised version,’ says Blencowe. The initial experiment saw a hacked needle-punching hand tool ratchet-strapped to a CNC machine. Further developments ensued and the attractive results were displayed at the RCA graduation show, demonstrating the fine-tuned accuracy that is possible using this dry-felting process.
‘It’s quite an aggressive process, so I became interested in heavier duty projects and I came to the idea of rugs,’ reveals Blencowe. The Motley Rug Collection marks the beginning of rug development created with the application of new Fuzzy Logic technology.
