‘For us, textiles are texts and represent the next frontier of modern art’ say Kavita Parmar and Marcella Echavarria, the founders of XTANT, an annual event held in Palma, described as ‘an exciting mix of Burning Man, a TED Talk and a village fair’. Supported by the government of Mallorca, XTANT: Fibra takes place from 9—13 May 2023.
Participants from more than twenty-five countries will gather for ‘a holistic celebration of craft, cultural identity and artistry in every facet of life’, promoting sustainability and responsible consumption, and emphasising the local on the global stage. A Market will feature Sanjay Garg of Raw Mango and Injiri from India; Nilda Callañaupa from Peru; AAAA from Mali, Studio Daniel Costa from Italy and many more artisans. There will be art installations dedicated to Spain’s tumultuous history with Merino wool and others from Angela Damman, Rosana Escobar, Adrian Pepe, Aurelie Hoegy and Paiwand Studio. XTANT is also hosting an educational programme focused on system change leadership, with guests including Lidewij Edelkoort and Dr Monisha Ahmed, 1—9 May at Finca Raixa.
