Design Days Dubai, the first and only limited-edition contemporary design fair in the Middle East and Asia, is now in full swing. Coinciding with Dubai Art Week, the fair welcomes 44 exhibitors from 20 countries, including some of the world’s most prestigious design galleries. Three Design Days Dubai highlights are of special textile interest.
Jan Kath is presenting his carpets with local partner Iwan Maktabi, building on a relationship that began when his grandfather bought rugs from Mona, Mohammed and Shirin Maktabi’s father. The Fatema Bint Mohammed Initiative (FBMI), based in Adu Dhabi, is running a project offering women in the weaving industry employment and training, the latter involving the weaving of Afghan style rugs using Afghan wool. Combining entrepreneurship and sustainability, FBMI’s stand will feature demonstrations of traditional weaving. Finally, Naqsh Design House is showcasing a collection based on traditional needlework, taking the language of ‘tatreez’ (embroidery) to new materials such as corian and brass.
