This May Clerkenwell Design Week saw record visitor numbers as over 20,000 people attended the three-day event. We saw inspiring rugs, textiles and furnishings with global design influences spread throughout the enticing exhibition spaces of the London design district.

Painterly fabric by artist, Marie-cécile Aptel graced the Pierre Frey stand in the Detail tent along with hand painted silks given structure with glass panels by Carole Waller and bed headboards by Ensemblier upholstered in artisan fabrics. Loophouse debuted two complimentary new rug designs in neutral shade shards, Broken and Shattered, as well as showing prototypes for a range of cosy lambswool blankets.

In the damp alcoves of the House of Detention, Platform showcased some glowing design from talented newcomers; Kit Miles, Clivework is a new label set up by fashion designer and printmaker, Lucy Clive and marks her first venture into furnishing fabrics – the printed linens call to mind an African resist dyed look that would suit both contemporary and traditional interiors (we hear silk scarves are soon to follow). A Rum Fellow launched their Maya fabric collection- handwoven and embroidered on backstrap looms at co-operatives in Guatemala, it looked magnificent used for the upholstery of stylish furniture manufactured in the UK.

Surreal chairs by the Campana Brothers for Edra lurked in the crypt at St John, and in another underground ecclesiastical location; Additions at St James, was an abundance of intriguing textiles and homewares by Toghal, Tori Murphy, Beulah-Home, David David, Rose Sharp Jones, Etoile Home, Custhom and Dash + Miller.
