Consisting of 160 individual, embroidered panels covering a length of 143 metres, the Tapestry is one of the biggest community art projects in the world. It took over 1,000 volunteers over 50,000 hours to complete.

The textile was the idea of Scottish writer Alexander McCall Smith who worked with illustrator Andrew Crummy to create the design, which covers events from the past 420 million years of Scottish history. The work was unveiled in the Scottish Parliament in 2013.
