Turquoise Mountain X USAID

Afghan carpet producers Turquoise Mountain and their world-renowned partners are pleased to announce a four-year market-linkages and capacity building program, generously supported by the United States Agency for International Development. The program is designed to enable continuous supply to the growing demand for handwoven Afghan rugs around the world.

Carpet weaving is at the heart of Afghanistan’s heritage. Fine, long-fiber Ghazni wool, natural vegetable and mineral dyes, skilled hands, and a variety of regional weaving techniques lend a unique character to rugs made in Afghanistan.

Three decades of conflict, however, have left the country virtually inaccessible to international buyers. Afghan producers have worked in isolation, cut off from developments in international tastes and production standards.

Over the last three years, Turquoise Mountain’s carpet experts have worked tirelessly to break this isolation, introducing on-trend weaving, washing, and finishing techniques, exposing producers to innovative designs, and improving colour-matching, quality control, and order fulfilment.

The results have been immediate: Afghan producers are now working with world-renowned designers and retailers such as Christopher Farr, Matt Camron, and Creative Matters Inc. who look towards Afghanistan for quality, authenticity, and competitive pricing.

With the support of Turquoise Mountain, Afghanistan has once again become accessible to carpet designers and dealers from all over the world. Their mediation guarantees stringent quality control, reliable order fulfilment, full transparency, and ease of doing business by working side by side with Afghanistan’s most talented producers and weavers.

At this unique moment, with foundations firmly in place and the demand for handwoven rugs growing, Turquoise Mountain and its partners are pleased to announce a four-year market-linkages and capacity building program, generously supported by the United States Agency for International Development.

The Carpet Exports, Jobs, and Market-Linkages Program will ensure that Afghanistan becomes fully integrated into the international market as producer companies master the entire value-chain⎯from wool spinning to finishing⎯and streamline order fulfilment, whilst making leaps in social and environmental responsibility.
