Highlights from the Salone Internazionale del Mobile, Milan 9-14 April 2013
The design world comes to Milan in April. Vast showcases are presented by designers that not only cover the main Saloni exhibition halls, but spill out all over the city. Some designs are top secret, to be unveiled tonight at the opening, while some designers will reveal their brave new designs beforehand. Here is a sneak peek of the exhibitions around town.
Nina Yashar, founder of Nilufar Gallery, invites you to view her selection of unique iconic pieces and modern discoveries. Beppe Caturegli and Giovannella Formica show four large-sized carpets from their new collection, ‘Chromosome P’. They depict lab plates used for cytogenetic exams, which is the chromosomal map of cells.
“What looks like an unknown cosmos with planets, galaxies, stars and far-away nebulae is an image of ourselves: the basic information programming our physical life.”

The IL PICCOLO showroom in Milan will be exhibiting a new designer work, Regata Storica by Luca Nichetto. This hand-tufted rug is produced in India in the finest wool, and its simple yet colourful design would work well in any modern home.

Nanimarquina has designed a new rug collection that invites us to feel what nature offers us, and to return to the roots of handmade carpets, materials and techniques. The ‘Natural Collection’ has been produced with a selection of natural fibres: nettle, Afghan wool, silk and jute. These fibres are twisted together into a continuous thread, a highly laborious manual process that enriches the design and gives each carpet a soft and unique texture.
