Nine Best Shows at Milan Design Week 2015

Milan Design Week starts in two weeks. Hotly anticipated every year, Fuori Salone is one of the biggest and most important design shows in the world. Here Lucy Upward recommends nine of the best shows and displays to see during the seven-day event.

1. SUPERDESIGN SHOW at Superstudio, via Tortona 27, 14-19 April

COVER magazine presents Jan Kath at Superstudio’s new design event SUPERDESIGN SHOW. Celebrating 15 years as the leader of international design in Milan the Superstudio group replaces the success of the Temporary Museum for New Design with the new SUPERDESIGN SHOW format. As well as Jan Kath the event will feature Marcel Wanders for LG Hausys, Material Connexion, SoFarSoNear, Jens Otten Produktdesign and Tipart.

2. Designjunction, Casa dell’Opera Nazionale Balilla, Via Pietro Mascagni 6, 15-19 April

This year, for the brand’s fourth outing at Milan Design Week, Designjunction is in an intriguing new location in the San Babila area of the city centre. The former school building Casa dell’Opera will be hosting over 30 international brands including rug designer Luke Irwin, ercol, Tom Dixon and Anglepoise.

3. cc-tapis, via San Simpliciano 6, Brera Design District, 14-19 April

We are proud to announce a COVER presents event at the cc-tapis showroom during Fuorisalone in Milan this April. Three typically elegant cc-tapis collections will be on display. The brand continually delivers stylish carpets with a much-loved timeless look. Its new Dipped collection of five designs executed in powder pinks and lichen greys is no exception.

The Milan-based studio has a reputation for working with some of the most highly motivated, boundary-pushing creatives in Italy. The latest collaboration is with the elusive Federico Pepe, whose roles as artist, art director, advertising consultant, graphic designer, video-maker and typographer make him somewhat of a hybrid himself. His carpet designs channel art deco decadence, yet remain faithful to the pared-down, high-end cc-style. The whole collection will be unveiled for the first time in Milan in April.

The next project in the pipeline is with architect Federico Delrosso. Visitors to the showroom during the COVER presents show will be treated to preview samples.

4. Salone del Mobile, Fiera Milano, Rho, 14-19 April

One of the main focuses of Milan Design Week is Salone del Mobile. This vast show is a must-see event for anyone who works in design and this year the rug companies to see are ABC Italia, Chevalier édition from Paris, Golran, Danskina, Kasthall, Kvadrat, nanimarquina, Moret, Sahrai, Toulemonde Bochart and Stepevi. We can’t wait to see new collections by Chevalier édition.

5. Ventura Lambrate, 14-19 April

Ventura Lambrate in the north east of the city centre is the place to see young, upcoming designers and some of the coolest brands plus exhibitions by the likes of trend forecaster Li Edelkoort (see below). Wandering from building to building in the Ventura area one can see an enormous array of displays. This year will include Nienke Hoogvliet’s designs including the fascinating Sea Me rug (below), which features in the latest issue of COVER. Also showing textiles and carpets will be Roos Soetekouw, Mae Engelgeer and many more.

6. Spazio Rossana Orlandi, Via Matteo Bandello 14/16, 14-19 April

It is always worth a visit to the intriguing Rossana Orlandi site, which is packed full of work by some of the best international designers around. Last year Marimekko and Bokja (below) each took over a room of the building.

7. We Make Carpets, Ventura XV, Via Privata Giovanni Ventura 15, Ventura Lambrate, 14-19 April

In the Venture Lambrate district, the Dutch design studio We Make Carpets will be showing a version of its ‘Kneeling’ exhibition that showed at MU Eindhoven last year to celebrate five years of the firm’s wonderful temporary contemporary carpets. Expect to wowed by pasta, paper, party hats and streamers.

8. ‘GATHERING: From Domestic Craft to Contemporary Process’ by Edelkoort Exhibitions, Via Cletto Arrighi 19, Ventura Lambrate, 14-19 April

For Milan 2015 Li Edelkoort and co-curator Philip Fimmano will recreate a version of their exhibition that showed at Israel’s Design Museum Holon last year. Designers Patricia Urquiola, Marcel Wanders and the Bouroullec brothers plus the 132 5. Issey Miyake collection were in the 2014 display so we shall see which of the works travel to Milan.

9. Nodus, Chiostro della Facoltà Teologica dell’Italia Settentrionale, via Cavalieri del Santo Sepolcro 3, 14-19 April

Nodus is returning to the great venue of the cloisters of the Church of San Simpliciano to show the firm’s latest round of fabulous rugs. The Italian brand has worked with some of the biggest names in design and have brought us some amazing rugs like the unforgettable Circus by the Campana Brothers (below). We cannot wait to see who will be on show this year.
