Take Off Your Shoes And Open Your Eyes – Alberto Levi in collaboration with Arjumand
Traditionally the Fuori Salone represents a unique opportunity for the Alberto Levi Gallery to showcase the latest innovations from the world of contemporary carpets. This year the floor coverings will be presented together with their most natural complement – artistic decorative fabrics. Alberto Levi and Idarica Gazzoni have prepared a number of collections which should complement each other, especially as they are both inspired by the same sources.
TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES AND OPEN YOUR EYES is an installation of carpets and fabrics presented in imaginary interiors. There are three distinct spaces, two at the Alberto Levi Gallery in Via San Maurilio 24 and one in SPAZIO ARJUMAND in Via Santa Marta 11, within walking distance from each other. This year’s carpet novelty is the AQUASILK collection, hand knotted in India exclusively with recycled silk from Indian Saris, overdyed with specific colours and techniques which impart a visual impression of looking at a carpet immersed in clear water. The patterns are partly borrowed from antique Ikat textiles from Central Asia, the same source which inspired the CANVAS collection, the latest pure linen fabrics designed by Idarica Gazzoni for ARJUMAND. Testifying the long standing oriental tradition of hand-drawn fabrics, ARJUMAND precious linens seem to derive both from Eastern as well as Western traditions, such as the NEW DECO collection, based on patterns in ivory and black originating both from Japan as well as from the geometric abstractions of design masters from the Thirties like Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann. These will be juxtaposed to a group of minimalist kilims woven in Afghanistan exclusively for Alberto Levi, decorated by motifs derived from the Art Deco tradition.
SPAZIO ARJUMAND, located in a marvelous Renaissance courtyard, will host the OLD WORLD COLLECTION, contemporary carpets with a patina of age inspired by the stunning antique Samarkands and Agras. These will be shown alongside Idarica Gazzoni’s fabric creations, which originate for the most part from the ancient India of Princess Arjumand.
TAKE OFF YOUR SHOES AND OPEN YOUR EYES is an invitation at loving oneself, to relax and enter the magical world of textile art.
